Tim, the systems designer

I have two favorite things about games. First, I love to create satisfying gameplay experiences, such as the combat from Dark Souls or the instruments from Rock Band. It’s wonderful to play and watch others play games that are easy to pick up but have complex, even puzzle-like execution. Second, I thoroughly enjoy immersing myself in — and working out a delicate balance between — the numbers under the hood of a game. Working on optimization in Nautical Nonsense and 7 Wonders is a lot of fun. As a player, I get to figure out exactly how successful I can be; as a designer, I get to ensure my players have plenty of options to play whichever fantasy most appeals.

Tim, the Team Lead

My graduating class had a total of five producers to cover about two dozen teams. Knowing how important direction and focus are to a team’s success, I stepped up to lead projects beginning late Sophomore year. I took on the producer role for almost every team I joined afterwards, and supplemented my “trial by fire” with Scrum Master and Product Owner certification. I learned I could create success by focusing on supporting my team: organizing and prioritizing objectives, facilitating necessary conversations, brokering compromises, and — perhaps most importantly — ensuring my team’s mental well-being.

Tim, the Programmer

I first learned programming in 2008 at City College of San Francisco. There I learned algorithms, recursion, and memory management in C++, as well as dynamic web development in Ruby. When I moved to Champlain, programming was a natural minor. I learned to write scripts, shaders, physics engines, and graphics engines, and gained experience in C#, glsl, Unity, and Unreal. I also learned to work with repositories such as git and mercurial to the point where I was comfortable handling merge issues and teaching others how to safely push and pull their work.

Tim, the Person

I moved all around the country while growing up, so it’s fitting that I first stepped foot in Vermont to attend a new college and made sure to attend a semester abroad in Montreal. A few of my favorite games are Apex Legends, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, and Trails in the Sky. I love cats, dogs, new food, and traveling. People say I’m helpful, understanding, detail-oriented, and organized. I currently live in Delaware with my girlfriend and our families, but it’s easy enough to pack everything up to live and work somewhere new.
